Move and schedule issues
Every change you make on the chart is written to the issue in Jira straight away, as you. A message at the bottom confirms it and offers Undo.
With the mouse
| To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Move an issue | Drag the middle of its bar. The duration in working days stays the same. |
| Change the start or end | Drag the left or right edge of the bar. |
| Give an unscheduled issue dates | Click + dates next to its name: it gets a working week from today, or right after what it waits for. Or press and drag across the days on its row. |
| Move a whole epic | Drag its slim bar. Every issue under it moves by the same number of working days. |
| Add a dependency | Drag from the dot at the right end of a bar onto another bar. The other bar gets a dashed outline and a note says what letting go will do. See Dependencies. |
| See and change everything about an issue | Click it: the details panel opens on the right. |
| Open the issue in Jira | Double-click the bar or the row, or click the key. |
Dates snap to working days: a bar dropped on a Saturday starts on Monday. While you drag, a note above the bar shows the dates and the number of working days it will have when you let go; then the dates are saved.
In the details panel
Click an issue for its details on the right: type its start, end or number of working days there, and change its name, status, assignee, parent and dependencies. See The details panel.
By typing in the list
Turn on Display → Date columns, then double-click a Start, End or Days value in the list to type it. Enter or clicking elsewhere saves, Esc cancels.
| You change | What happens |
|---|---|
| Start | The issue moves to start that day and keeps its duration, as if you had dragged it. |
| End | The end moves; the start stays (unless the new end is before it). |
| Days | The duration in working days; the end moves to match. |
Schedule many issues at once
Schedule them… gives every issue without dates a place on the timeline from its estimate or story points, in its assignee's free time and after what it waits for. See Schedule issues without dates.
Tasks after it follow
With Auto-schedule on (the default), moving an issue later also pushes the issues that depend on it, so no dependency is broken. They are written to Jira in the same step and undone together. Turn it off to move issues freely; broken dependencies then show in Plan health.
Draft mode: publish together
Turn on Draft to try changes on the chart without writing them to Jira, review them, then publish them together or discard them. See Draft mode.
Undo and redo
Undo in the message, the ↶ button or Ctrl+Z (⌘Z on a Mac) puts the dates back in Jira, including the issues that moved with it. If the issue had no dates before, undo clears them again. Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Zredoes. Renaming an issue, changing its assignee and moving it under another parent undo the same way; a status change does not (move it back with the status menu). The last 50 steps are kept until you leave the page.
When Jira says no
If Jira refuses a change (for example you may not edit that issue, or a workflow makes the field read-only), the bar goes back and the message says which issue failed and why. The other issues in the same move are still saved.
Notifications
For project admins, date changes are saved without sending Jira notification e-mails, so dragging a plan around does not flood inboxes. For everyone else Jira sends its usual notifications for field changes.
Keyboard
↑ and ↓ select issues, Alt + ← and Alt + → move the selected one by a working day, Ctrl + Z undoes. Every shortcut is listed in Keyboard shortcuts.
