Your first plan in ten minutes

A walk through the things you will do every day, in the order you will need them. Open the Gantt tab of a project with a few issues and follow along; every step can be undone.

1. Read what you see

  1. The whole plan fits the screen

Each issue is a bar from its start to its end date; epics are slim dark bars over their issues. The red line is today.
  2. Colors

White is to do, blue in progress, green done. A red outline marks the critical path: the issues that decide when the plan finishes.
  3. Hover a bar

A tooltip shows its dates, working days, slack and progress.

More in Read the chart.

2. Move an issue

  1. Drag a bar

Drag the middle of a bar to another week. A note above it shows the new dates; let go and they are saved to Jira.
  2. Stretch it

Drag the right edge to make it longer.
  3. Undo

Press Ctrl+Z (or Undo in the message at the bottom). The dates go back in Jira.
  1. Draw a dependency

Hover a bar, drag the dot at its right end onto another bar and let go: the second now waits for the first.
  2. Watch it work

Move the first bar later: the second moves with it (Auto-schedule is on).

More in Dependencies and auto-scheduling.

4. Open the details

  1. Click an issue

The details panel opens on the right: name, status, assignee, parent, dates and dependencies.
  2. Change something

Click the status for the next workflow step, or the assignee to pick a person. Everything is saved to Jira as you.

More in The details panel.

5. Give dates to what has none

Issues without dates show + dates in the list. Click it for a working week from today, or use Schedule them… to place them all at once from their estimates. See Schedule issues without dates.

6. Check the plan's health

The coloured dot and number in the toolbar score the plan out of 100. Click it to see what costs points (broken dependencies, overdue issues, people with two issues at once) and fix each with one click. See Plan health.
