YTI Magic Estimation

Size a whole backlog in one meeting

Everyone sorts the issues into size columns on their own. Then the team talks only about the issues where the votes differ, and the estimates go back to Jira in one click.

The sorting board: unsorted issues on top, size columns 1 to 100 below, and how many issues each person has sorted
The sorting board of a session with five people.

What it does

  • Silent sorting. Each person places every issue in a column of the scale, comparing issues with each other rather than estimating one at a time. Nobody sees anyone else's placement.
  • Outliers first. After the reveal, issues whose votes are spread over three or more columns come first. That is where the conversation is worth it.
  • Median by default. Every issue starts at the median vote; the facilitator can change it or skip it.
  • Back to Jira. One click writes the final values to Story Points or any number field, with the facilitator's Jira permissions.
  • Inside Jira. Runs on Atlassian Forge. Nothing leaves Atlassian.
