"The JQL does not work"

Jira could not read the query. The message after the colon is Jira's own: usually a field name, a project key or a quote is wrong. Test the query in Jira search, then paste it again.

A colleague sees a different number

That is by design: the gadget counts with each viewer's permissions, so issues someone may not see are not counted for them.

"Sum of the first 1,000 issues"

Sums read up to 1,000 issues. Narrow the JQL, for example to the current sprint or the last quarter.

The trend is flat at zero

Check Period by: a trend by Resolved counts only resolved issues. Open issues have no resolution date.
